Course Aims

This course is designed to provide candidates with the mandatory knowledge and practical competencies required to prevent, detect, and respond to fire-related emergencies on board ship, in full compliance with STCW Code Section A-VI/2-1 and IMO Model Course 1.20.

Duration

15 hours | 1.5 days

Entry Requirement

• Be at least 16 years old

• Candidates must be medically fit to participate in practical exercises.

Educational Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be able to demonstrate proficiency in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/2-1 and IMO Model Course 1.20 by being able to:

• Take appropriate measures for the safety of personnel and the ship in the event of a fire..

• Identify and eliminate common shipboard fire hazards through preventive action.

• Understand the principles of fire chemistry and the classes of fire.

• Use fixed and portable fire extinguishing systems and appliances correctly.

• Raise the alarm and initiate proper response procedures upon discovering a fire.

• Don and use personal protective equipment (PPE), including fireman’s outfit and SCBA.

• Fight and extinguish fires using correct techniques and suitable extinguishing agents.

• Conduct search and rescue operations in smoke-filled or enclosed spaces.

• Coordinate effectively as part of a fire response team.

• Demonstrate a working knowledge of shipboard fire safety procedures and contingency plans.

Assessment

Candidates must successfully complete both a written examination and a practical evaluation.

A minimum passing grade of 60% must be achieved in each assessment.

Course Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Firefighting, based on IMO Model Course 1.20, in compliance with STCW Code Table A-VI/2-1, and approved by the Flag State Administration.
