Course Requirements

COLREGs – International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (Compliant with STCW A-II/1 and A-II/2)


Course Aims

This course is designed in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements to provide Officers in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OOW) and Masters with the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency (KUP) to correctly interpret and apply the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), 1972, as amended.

The course reinforces navigational safety, enhances decision-making skills, and ensures compliance with international obligations to prevent collisions under all conditions of visibility. Course Duration 5 days Entry Requirements Participants should: • Be at least 16 years old • Possess a basic understanding of navigation principles • Preferably have completed STCW basic safety training (A-VI/1-1 to A-VI/1-4)


Educational Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to demonstrate proficiency in accordance with STCW Table A-II/1 (OOW) and A-II/2 (Master/Chief Mate) by being able to:

Describe the structure, legal status, and purpose of the COLREGs, including Parts A to F and associated Annexes.

 Identify responsibilities between vessels in various conditions (restricted visibility, open sea, TSS, etc.).

 Apply the principles of keeping a proper lookout, determining safe speed, and assessing risk of collision.

 Interpret and apply maneuvering rules: overtaking, head-on, crossing, and give-way/stand-on vessel obligations.

 Demonstrate proper use of navigation lights, day shapes, and sound signals.

 Execute safe conduct of vessels in narrow channels, TSS, and during restricted visibility.

 Evaluate real-world incident case studies and apply COLREGs in practical navigation scenarios.

 Integrate COLREG rules into bridge team operations, utilizing radar, ARPA, and ECDIS when applicable.


Assessment

Participants will be assessed through a theoretical written examination at the end of the course, with a minimum passing grade of 70%.


Course Certificate

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Proficiency in International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), based on the IMO Model Framework, in compliance with STCW Code Tables A-II/1 and A-II/2, and approved by the Flag State Administration.
